Drum Bus EQ settings

Image
Remember that you need to use additive EQ only if necessary or else you’ll end up with a muddy mix, that is why a lot of people recommend subtrative EQ because it’s much safer. So use this approach wisely and keep in mind that this is a guideline. Low-End:  For your drum bus, you won’t need a drastic high-pass filter. Create a small high-pass filter till around 30Hz and not more. Boominess:  Make a small cut in the 60Hz range to remove some boominess. Don’t use a low-shelf EQ, use a bandpass filter with a narrow Q factor. Fullness:  If you have t hin and wimpy drums, make a boost in the 125Hz frequency range. This will add some punch and fullness. Body:  A really small boost in the 250Hz range will add more body and weight helping the drums sound warmer. Boxiness:  Since you’re going to add a lot of frequencies you’ll need a big cut around 500Hz to remove mud and boxiness. Attack & Presence: 2 boosts, one around 1kHz and another...

Distortion

Image
Distortion is the alteration of the original shape of something. In our case the waveform. By altering the original shape of a waveform you create musical effects. I personally use a lot of distortion type effects in my tracks. I place them on inserts just to make sounds come more forward in the mix. I use distortion to control my levels even more. U can kill the dynamic range for your sound which in some cases is a desirable effect. Like in a comparable way as a compressor. I use distortion to create completely different sounds. Like making a saw wave lead from a simple bass guitar sample. I use band distortion to accentuate some frequencie bands of a sound a bit more. I also use distortion as an FX send. If you like the original sound, don’t want to alter it, but you want to add some grittyness you can try it via this way. I use distortion to create filter sweeps for ...

What are the risks and rewards to processing your mix buss (or master channel) during a mix? Get tips on how to become a master of mix buss processing. It’s the secret weapon in every mixing engineer’s arsenal, the secret sauce in every mixer’s collection of recipes. We’re talking about mix buss processing, and in this article we’ll cover what it is, how to use it (Rule One: Don’t abuse it!), and the best way to reap its benefits. We’ll also take a close-up look at a couple of the latest generation of integrated ‘final touch’ mix buss plugins. 1. What Is Mix Buss Processing and Why Use It? In a nutshell, mix buss processing is the application of one or more signal-changing processes (such as compression or EQ) to the stereo buss or master fader. Therefore, by definition, it affects all tracks, not just certain instruments. At first glance, this may appear counterintuitive. After all, the mix stage provides the last opportunity to adjust balances and fix any problems with individual...
