Making a cool bass




Take a sub bas and play your melody with that one. Cutoff all the high until at least 1.5 kHz.

Compress the sub bas to keep it under control. and cutoff everything beneath 40 Hz.

Make sure it's mono. Put a bit of side-chain on it. So your kick can stand out in comparison to the Sub baseline.

Now Copy that melody to another synth on which you make an 2 voice oscillator saw wave.

Cutoff a bit of the low end. Let's say everything under 100 hZ. Put a stereo expander on it and then distort it big time (but keep it pretty natural sounding).

Blend the two together and you will have a bassline that cuts thru everything.

Remember that you need to use additive EQ only if necessary or else you’ll end up with a muddy mix, that is why a lot of people recommend subtrative EQ because it’s much safer. So use this approach wisely and keep in mind that this is a guideline. Low-End:  For your drum bus, you won’t need a drastic high-pass filter. Create a small high-pass filter till around 30Hz and not more. Boominess:  Make a small cut in the 60Hz range to remove some boominess. Don’t use a low-shelf EQ, use a bandpass filter with a narrow Q factor. Fullness:  If you have t hin and wimpy drums, make a boost in the 125Hz frequency range. This will add some punch and fullness.
